Frequently Asked Questions
What is CBT and who has to take it?
CBT is not a test, but a structured course and will teach you
all the basics of riding a motorcycle or moped safely on the road.
CBT is compulsory to all new riders,
allowing a 16 year old to ride a moped with 'L'-plates. If you are
17 or over and hold an appropriate licence, on attaining your CBT
certificate you may ride any machine up to 125cc, again with
'L'-plates. CBT is also a requirement should you wish to go
on and take a motorcycle or moped 'Test'.
A CBT certificate is valid for 2 years,
after which time it must be taken again, unless the DSA Test is
taken within this period.
Full car licence holders must take CBT if
they wish to ride a machine of greater than 50cc and up to 125cc
A full car licence held prior to 1st February 2001, allows the
holder to ride a 'moped' i.e. a machine, which does not exceed 50cc
and has a design speed not exceeding 50kmh (approx 31mph), without
doing CBT and without displaying 'L'-plates. However, it is
highly recommended that if you have never ridden before, you should
consider taking a CBT.
A full car licence taken after 1st February
2001, allows the holder to ride a moped after completing CBT,
until his car licence expires. i.e. the '2 Year rule' does
not apply. I'm a Car Driver, do I have to
take a Theory Test.
Yes, any body wishing to take a motorcycle Test,
must do a Theory Test.
How long is my Theory Pass Certificate
valid For?
The Theory Certificate is valid for 2 Years, if
you fail to pass the Practical Test within this time, you will have
to retake the Theory Test. I recently
passed a Car Theory Test, do I now need to take a Motorcycle Theory
Test? Yes!! |
