Course Fact Sheet - Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) -  You DON'T need to do a Theory Test in order to do a CBT

PARAGON's Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course follows the guidelines laid down by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and is conducted on a 1:2 basis. CBT takes anywhere from 4-7 hours of which at least 2 hours will be on Road. The course is mainly conducted in the one day, however, some people require more than the one day, in this event a charge of £35 may be incurred for a second Day. The majority of the course is taken within a closed area; in our case our CBT sites are a school playground and an enclosed car park, a safe area in which to start your motorcycling adventure!

PARAGON has a fleet of hire motorcycles and mopeds available for you to use free of charge. All of our motorcycles come with fully Comprehensive insurance, and are well-maintained modern machines, and make an ideal start to learn on.

Want to use your own machine? - No problem! However, you must ensure that your machine complies to all the usual legal requirements, i.e. Road tax, insurance, MoT certificate. The machine must also be in a safe working order complete with 'L'-plates front and rear, of the correct size. Please also ensure that your insurance company knows that  you are going to use your machine to do CBT course on.

A CBT must be completed by anyone wishing to take a full licence course, A theory test is not required, in order to do a CBT, but will be required by anyone going on to do a  Practical test.

Paragon can also pick up your machine and deliver it to the CBT site; a small charge may be incurred for this service.

Our main site is the 'Working men's Club' in Mill Road, Fareham, PO16 0TN, which we operate from on Monday to Fridays, We do also do some weekend CBT's at our site at 'Leesland Junior School', Gordon Road Gosport, PO12 3QE

A Guide to CBT

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced motorcyclists.

Anyone attending CBT must have a valid provisional motorcycle licence, or a full Car licence and must bring both parts of their licence with them to the CBT. Failure to bring the counterpart with you will result in the CBT being cancelled and the fee lost.

All learner motorcycle and learner moped riders must complete a CBT course before riding on the road.

Also, with effect from 1 February 2001, all new car drivers wanting to validate the full moped entitlement granted with their full car licence must complete a CBT course.

The CBT course syllabus includes five elements that have to be completed in sequence:

*                               Element A - Introduction.

*                               Element B - Practical on-site training.

*                               Element C - Practical on-site riding.

*                               Element D - Practical on-road training.

*                               Element E - Practical on-road riding.

 When you have satisfactorily completed all five elements you will be issued with a Certificate of Completion of Training (DL196).

This is a legal document which serves to validate the relevant entitlements on the driving licence. It is important that the holder of a DL196 certificate considers the following points:

*                               A DL196 certificate issued after 1 February 2001 validating a provisional moped or provisional motorcycle entitlement lasts for 2 years. CBT will have to be re-taken if both theory/practical tests are not passed within the 2-year certificate life.

*                               A DL196 certificate validating a full moped entitlement is not subject to expiry.

You do not have to take CBT again if you hold a full motorcycle licence and wish to obtain a licence for another category of motorcycle.

You do not need to do a Theory Test to do a CBT, but you will need to do it if you want to go on and take a full Bike licence.

With effect from the 1 February 2001 riders completing their CBT course on a moped with more than 2 wheels or who use a motorcycle/sidecar combination will be restricted to riding those machines as a learner.

Once you have your Certificate (DL 196) you are advised to take additional training to pass your tests and qualify for a full motorcycle or moped licence.

CBT must be completed before riding on the road by all learner riders (and moped riders using a full car licence gained after 1 February 2001) who are resident on mainland Great Britain, islands that are connected to the mainland by a road, and the following islands: Wight, North Uist, Lewis, South Uist, Harris, Benbecula, mainland Orkney and mainland Shetland. Residents of all other islands will be exempt from the need to take CBT, but only if riding on roads which are on an exempt island.
